To set up your free personal home
page you need to create a sub-directory of your home directory
called public_html using an FTP
program. The host address you need to FTP into is ftp.michcom.net.
You will automatically start out in your home directory after
you log in with the FTP program. Then create the public_html
directory (e.g. "mkdir public_html", if your using
a non-graphical program). Everything related to your home
page must be stored in that directory. After you've created/designed
your home page -- which must be named one of the following: index.htm, index.html, home.htm,
or home.html -- upload it into public_html.
The web address, or URL, of a
personal home page on Michcom.net is http://www.michcom.net/~username.
Be sure to include the "~" (tilde) before the username,
the key for that character should be located above the "Tab" key,
left of the number "1" key. So if your username is
jdoe you would tell people that the address of your home page
is http://www.michcom.net/~jdoe.
This only works if your home page
is named one of the four names mentioned earlier. If you want
to name it something else for any reason, you need to append
that onto your web page address (e.g. http://www.michcom.net/~jdoe/othername.html").
